This change appeared in August Roterberg's New Era Card Tricks, 1897, p. 87, under the title “A Mysterious Change.” Ed Marlo later adopted the mechanics of this sleight to steal back the bottom card of an outjogged group being stripped from the deck. The card to be secretly left in the deck was outjogged a bit less than the other, to facilitate the steal. It appeared in The Linking Ring, Vol. 55 No. 2, Feb. 1975, p. 56.
