The first published method for doing this seems to have been Clayton William Rosencrance's “Vis-a-Vis Cards Producing Coin”, in which the coin is concealed in back palm. This appeared in The Sphinx, Vol. 23 No. 3, May 1924, p. 105, and later in Greater Magic, without credit to Rosencrance.
