Jean Hugard and Fred Braue put this sleight into The Royal Road to Card Magic, 1948, p. 191. There, they make no claim to the sleight. It is merely called “Fourth Method.” However, somewhere shortly after the appearance of the book, Braue's name became attached to this reverse.
The main cutting action of this sleight was reported in The Phoenix, No. 264, Sep. 1952, p. 1055, to have been created by Clyde Cairy. No citations were given regarding whether Cairy had published it prior to the release of The Royal Road to Card Magic.
