Stewart James's “Progressive Card to Pocket” in The Linking Ring, Vol. 35 No. 4, June 1955, p. 82-84, is likely the first Cards to Pocket routine to use a packet in sequential order (Ace through Nine of Spades, plus the Queen of Hearts), and make the cards pass to the pocket in that order. According to James, he developed it in early 1948 (see Stewart James In Print: The First Fifty Years, 1989, p. 662).
