A perfectly sound method for switching four cards on the table for four palmed in the hand is given in an unpublished and anonymous notebook written circa 1800. The book was transcribed and published by Will Houstoun as The Notebook, 2009, p. 85. Using an inward sweeping motion of the palming hand, the unwanted cards are deposited on top of the deck, which is held just behind the edge of the table. This method was seen performed by a conjurer named Rea, Reay or Ray.
