Though the trick is reported to be of oriental origin, Frank Ducrot is the inventor of the common method using a clear disk. He devised it around the turn of the twentieth century. Al Baker improved the method with a rubber cover. Alexander Herrmann invented the double-walled “Brahman Bowls”. Since Herrmann died in 1896, I don't know if the Brahman Bowls preceded Ducrot's.
