The first discovered mention of this effect is found in the December 18, 1887, issue of New York Herald, in a review of a magic set, p. 6. The set is reported to include a “new” effect, “Prof. Allerton's 'cigarette paper trick'”. The identity of Prof. Allerton is unknown. Nor does the reporter give the name or manufacturer of the magic set being reviewed.
