In Charlatan, No. 2, 2000, p. 19, Fulves credits John Scarne with inventing this technique in his teens. However, the first printed description was from Bill Zavis in a 1950 issue of The Sphinx, titled “Aces Up”. Zavis doesn't recall how or when the idea came to him.
