Making a playing card secretly magnetic by hiding a thin piece of magnetic steel between the layers of the card is described by Edmé-Gilles Guyot in his Nouvelles récréations physiques et mathématiques, Vol. 1, 1769, p. 150. The similar gimmicking a card with a shim of steel that can be attracted and detected by a magnet must have been conceived during the same period.
