Said to have come from the gambling world. Max Maven discovered an ad in the September 1919 issue of Thayer's Magical Bulletin for “The Mystic Box and Lucky Die”, but the box is probably far older. Bridger Lewis, in the October 1956 issue of Magic Wand, p. 103, reports that it was a favorite pocket trick of Chung Ling Soo.
