The form of Servante designed to attach to a chair back probably appeared in the mid to late 1800s. This dating is suggested by an ad for a “New Card Servante” advertised by Ellis Stanyon & Co. in Magic, Vol. 2 No. 3, Dec. 1901, p. 24; which is mentioned to have a “New design, brass and network.”
