How to compose new articles

Searching for the article

First you must decide on the title (e.g. “riffle pass”).

To create a new page, you have to enter the title of it (for example “riffle pass”) in the search box. However you need to put the prop in front of it. Available props are: bill, cane, cards, coin, dice, illusion, matches, mental, misc, paper, ring, silk, wand. “misc” is for anything not included in one of the other prop categories. The prop comes before the title, separated by a “:”-sign.

For example you put “cards:riffle pass” in the search box and press enter. (You must be logged in, of course!)

Use only those Props in the list above. The prop before the name is very important and required to place the article in its category.

Start writing

Then you will be told that the site does not exist (except if it does exist already, of course). When you click on the right side on the pencil icon, it says “Create this page” and you can start creating it!

On the top of your article, you should repeat the title as a headline, see any other site on how it looks. For example, this is the source:

====== Purse Palm ======

Sometimes called the Morritt palm, but it is older. It is described by Robert Hellis in his notebook, 1873. See //[[http://askalexander.org/display/20992/Hellis+in+Wonderland/59|Hellis in Wonderland]]//, p. 41. Morritt was twelve years old in 1873.

{{tag>technique}}

…and that's how it looks: Purse Palm

If you simply compare this source code with the site itself, you should quickly understand how it works.

Adding tags

At the bottom of the article, a tag should be added. On the toolbar immediately on top of the text box in which you are writing, there is a button near the end for tags. Click it and then insert the tags in the appearing code. Multiple tags are separated by a simple empty space character. Again you can view the source code of other articles with tags if you have doubt.

The allowed tags are: effect, technique, principle, prop, presentation, subtlety, theory, anecdote.

For example, adding the two tags “effect” and “technique”, you would put this at the end of your article:

{{tag>effect technique}}

Use the preview

Before clicking “Save” check out your article with the “Preview” option. There you can catch mis-formatted text and spelling errors. Every change of the site is stored in the revision history and to have it as uncluttered as possible, it's good to do not too many “Save”s that are not required.

General Syntax information...

…can be found here: Formatting Syntax.

Regarding citations, that's the practice: Publications should be in italics, and items in quotes. Please always include the year and page number, if possible! So it would be something like this: See the effect “Super Duper Reverse” by Adam Smith in Miracles in Magic, 1969, p. 42.

Or for a magazine citation like this: Journal title, Vol. # No. #, Month Year, p. #. Example: See Magic Chris's “Extraordinary Quadruple Lift” from Miracle Magazine, Vol. 14 No. 5, Sep. 1942, p. 10.
